What is Body Contouring?

Often times after losing a significant amount a weight, a person may be left with sagging skin all over the body. In this case, body contouring can help correct the loose, hanging skin that is caused by decreased skin elasticity from weight loss. Total body contouring will usually involve a variety of procedures, including mastopexy (breast lift), abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), lower body lift, thigh lift, and liposuction. Only by removing the excess skin can we reshape and restore a more natural body contour.

How is Body Contouring Performed?

Body contouring is generally made up of a combination of different procedures, including a breast lift, tummy tuck, lower body lift, thigh lift, etc. Your surgeon will discuss a plan for the timing of all of these procedures during your initial consultation.

Regardless of the procedure, they will all start by administering anesthesia, followed by making an incision in the treatment area to remove excess skin. The length and pattern of the incision will depend on the location and amount of excess skin to be removed, and every effort will be made to strategically place incision marks in inconspicuous areas on the body.

Lower body lifts and tummy tucks typically treat the buttocks, abdomen, waist, hips and outer thighs, while breast lifts treat sagging breasts and arm lifts remove excess skin from the arms.

Am I a Good Candidate for Body Contouring?

If you have lost a significant amount of weight and are unhappy with the excess, sagging skin all over your body, you may be a good candidate for body contouring procedures. However, as with any cosmetic procedure, there are risks involved. If you are a diabetic, a smoker, if you have poor circulation, or if you still have a lot of weight to lose, body contouring may not be for you. You should discuss your medical history with your doctor prior to undergoing body contouring procedures.

What Kind of Post-Operative Body Contouring Care Can I Expect?

Immediately following your body contouring procedures, your surgeon will apply dressings and bandages to the incision sites. He may also place a thin tube under the skin to drain any excess fluid or blood in the days following the surgery.

Depending on the procedure(s) performed, your recovery time will vary. It could take upward of four to six weeks before you're back at work or resuming daily activities. Also, it's important to refrain from any activities that may cause force, abrasions or any other strain on the incision sites. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medications to help manage discomfort, and give you specific after-care instructions depending on the procedure you had performed.
