What is a Breast Lift?

Breast lift surgery is for women who have lost breast volume, often appearing to sag. This could be following childbirth or simply due to the effects of aging. In this procedure, also known as mastopexy, the breasts are raised, the nipples are repositioned, and sometimes the areolas are reduced in size. Many women choose to have this procedure along with a breast augmentation procedure.

How are Breast Lifts Performed?

Most of the breast lift procedures done in our Maumee office are performed using general anesthesia. Your surgeon will make either a peri-areolar incision (under the nipple), or an anchor-shaped incision, depending on the degree of the lift needed. He will then remove excess skin, lift the nipple and areola to a higher position on the breast, and close the incision.

Some patients are concerned about losing sensation in their nipple following a breast lift, but this is not a typical outcome. The nipple and areola remain connected to the underlying breast tissue, nerve and blood supply, so all feeling should remain intact. The entire procedure takes about one to three hours.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Both larger-breasted and smaller-breasted women can benefit from a breast lift; however, smaller-breasted women will typically have longer lasting results. This is because larger, heavier breasts work against the results over time.

In any case, if you're unhappy with drooping, sagging breasts due to pregnancy, age or any other factor, you may be a suitable candidate for a breast lift. We do recommend that women who are planning to become pregnant should wait until after breastfeeding to undergo a mastopexy procedure, as pregnancy can stretch the breast tissue.

What Kind of Post-Operative Breast Lift Care Can I Expect?

Following the breast lift procedure, your surgeon will provide you with a surgical bra to wear for a few days to help reduce swelling. You may also experience some bruising and soreness of the breasts.

Your doctor will advise you to avoid any heavy lifting, as this can cause increased pressure on the breasts. After about a week or two, your surgeon will remove the stitches, and you should be able to return to work within about seven days.
