What is Liposuction?

Also known as lipoplasty, liposuction works best on those who are in shape, but struggle with localized fat deposits that often won't respond to diet and exercise. The procedure uses a thin, hollow tube to remove excess fat from specific areas on the body, leaving patients with a smoother, softer contour. Liposuction is great for both men and women, and can be performed all over the body, from the hips, thighs and buttocks to the abdomen, upper arms and knees.

How is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction is performed through a small stab wound incision. Tumescent fluid is infiltrated into the tissue to help facilitate fat out of the body. A thin, hollow tube known as a cannula is then inserted and passed back and forth in a fan-like motion to help evenly suction out fatty deposits.

Here at our Maumee office, liposuction is typically performed under general anesthetic, and may take one to two hours per treatment area. Once complete, your surgeon will discuss the recovery and healing process with you.

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

The liposuction procedure is specifically designed for people who are in generally good shape, but have a hard time getting rid of pesky pockets of fat – whether it be love handles, flabby upper arms or any other problem spot. It is not, in effect, a method for overall weight loss, and overweight patients should make every effort to lose the weight through diet and exercise first.

The best liposuction candidates have realistic expectations of the procedure, as well as good skin tone and elasticity.

What Kind of Post-Operative Liposuction Care Can I Expect?

Following a liposuction procedure, the patient will be placed in a compression garment for four to six weeks to reduce swelling. We advise our patients to start moving around as soon as possible to aid in the healing process, but you may not be able to return to work for about one to three weeks – depending on the patient and the extent of the procedure. You'll most likely have to refrain from strenuous activity, such as exercise, for an additional couple of weeks.

What are the Typical Results of Liposuction ?

If you're interested in having this procedure, the best point of reference is to look through some liposuction before and after pictures. These will give you a good idea of what the results should be.

It's important to remember, however, that liposuction is not a replacement for diet and exercise.
