An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is performed for patients who have excess skin and/or a protuberant abdomen. Unlike liposuction, which simply removes fat through suction, a tummy tuck is performed by making an incision from hip to hip, which allows tissues to be elevated and the underlying muscles tightened. By tightening the rectus muscles, this will give you the appearance of a flat belly.

Tummy tuck procedures are performed under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will begin the abdominoplasty by making an incision along the bikini line. Every effort will be made to keep these incisions hidden, and the scars will begin to fade in time. The surgeon will then tighten and repair your weakened underlying muscle – which may be a result of pregnancy, aging, etc. – before removing the excess fat, skin and tissue. He or she will then close the incisions to complete the surgery.

Following your tummy tuck procedure, the incision site will be stitched and bandaged. Your plastic surgeon may have you wear either an elastic bandage or a compression garment to minimize swelling and to support your abdomen as it heals. It’s very important that you follow all of your surgeon’s instructions on wearing this garment (if you are given one) and caring for the bandage in the days following surgery. Your surgeon will also instruct you on how to best position yourself while sitting or lying down to help ease pain.
